Overview

Canada’s Policy for Conservation of Wild Pacific Salmon, also known as the Wild Salmon Policy (WSP), was released by DFO in 2005 as an innovative and strategic policy to guide the conservation and protection of wild salmon. WSP implementation lagged in the following years, and the 2012 Cohen Commission called on DFO to develop a formal implementation plan.

FNFC worked with the Salmon Coordinating Committee (SCC) to jointly draft the 2018-2022 Wild Salmon Policy Implementation Plan (WSPIP) with DFO, which outlines 9 overarching approaches and 48 actions DFO has committed to over this 5-year period.

In 2020-21, the WSPIP was amended to include Fisheries Act amendments that came into effect in 2018. The parties are now reviewing WSPIP progress, and whether WSP implementation is effectively supporting Pacific salmon conservation and recovery.
