Trilateral Declaration and Accord to Address the Decline of Wild Pacific Salmon

FNFC is pleased to announce that on National Indigenous Peoples Day, June 21, 2024, John Henderson (Vice-President of the First Nations Fisheries Council of B.C.), along with the Honourable Diane Lebouthillier (Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard) and the Honourable Kelly Greene (British Columbia Parliamentary Secretary for Fisheries and Aquaculture), signed a historic Trilateral Declaration and Accord to Address the Decline of Wild Pacific Salmon.

Wild Pacific salmon holds profound cultural significance for First Nations across B.C., with populations decreasing by over 90% since the 1970s. This Declaration and Accord among the three parties comes at a crucial time, establishing a collaborative process to align efforts and coordinate shared priorities for salmon recovery. It represents a significant leap forward, enabling the signing partners to develop collaborative long-term strategies to address the decline of wild Pacific salmon.

“Working together as one is imperative because the health of our salmon affects us all. Our environment, communities, culture, and wellbeing rely on salmon. We need to work together and build the relationships necessary to ensure that we have salmon for generations to come. The Trilateral Accord is a massive step forward to achieving that goal.” – John Henderson, Vice-President, First Nations Fisheries Council of BC

FNFC is honored to mark this milestone on National Indigenous Peoples Day this year, reaffirming our commitment to safeguarding wild Pacific salmon for future generations. Together with our partners, we look forward to implementing these vital initiatives.
